I am going to Guatemala through Missionary Ventures. I will be there from May 3rd-August 31, 2011

While there I will be interning with a midwife, who started a birthing house in Sayache, Guatemala because often times women aren't treated properly when they go to the public hospitital. Their dignity isn't maintained and they aren't told what is going on. Also no one is allowed to accompany them into the hospital, thus they labor alone. In addition they are given no water (in case of c section) and put through unnecessary medical procedures. Because of this the process of birthing is greatly feared. The aim of this birthing house is to make birth a joyous time.
